Supro / Valco - Supreme 1600
Vintage 1959 Made in Chicago, Illinois USA. An all original example from the series of amps that were used on the seminal albums of Rock and Roll.
The 16** series of Valco amps include the 1690T Coronado; a twin 10 inch speaker combo with tremolo that was most famously used by Jimmy Page to record all of the guitar parts for Led Zeppelin I, (although that one was modded to just a single 12 inch speaker).
The 1600 Supreme differs from the 1690T as it does not feature the tremolo circuit, it uses ‘6973’ power valves (instead of 6L6; the 6973 is lower wattage), and comes stock with a single 10 inch AlNiCo speaker; however the tone is arguably very similar.
Thanks to its 5Y3 valve rectifier, the amp experiences natural sag/compression when driven. When played with a Fuzz pedal in the front end, the saturation nails the tone so eagerly sought by those trying to get the ‘Jimmy Page’ sound.
A simple offering of a single Tone and Volume control means this amp can be dialled in without fuss.
Beyond its similarities to the ‘Jimmy Page Amp’, the 1600 Supreme is famously known as one of the key recording amps favoured by Keith Richards during the 60’s and 70’s.
This example is in all original condition and runs 6973 tubes (later issues switched to 6V6 tubes). A new matched pair of EHX 6973 power valves have just been installed and the original speaker shows no signs of fatigue.
*This is an original US release and as such requires 100 Volt mains supply; a step down transformer will be needed for use within Australia.
Regular price $3,900.00
